Renowned American martial arts instructor heading to Tapawera

World-renowned American jujutsu sensei Roy Hobbs will be in New Zealand next month as a guest of the Tapawera Dentokan jujutsu class. A retired colonel from the United States Air Force, Hobbs is here to grade Tapawera's chief instructor Tony Hammersley to fourth dan black belt and instructors Robert MacGregor and David Carson to second dan black belt.

Karate | Coni Mae targets 2020 Olympics after being crowned English champion

Nine-year-old Coni Mae competed in the English Karate Federation National Championships after two years training with Stafford-based Ryu Shotokan Karate. Coni Mae is already ranked second in Britain for her category, and on Sunday she won the female kata category with a clean sweep, winning each round with a best-possible score of 3-0 to be named national champion.

SKF selects 5 karate athletes from rival faction SEA Games national team

SINGAPORE: Five karate athletes from Singapore's break-away karate faction – the Karate-do Union of Singapore – have been selected for the national team for the upcoming SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur. The country's official karate body – the Singapore Karate-do Federation – held an open selection trial last Saturday at Tanglin Trust School which was open to the public, including to non-affiliate club members.

Momence mayor won’t seek re-election

Citing new teaching responsibilities at Momence Junior High School, Mick Porter, Momence's two-term mayor, said he will not be seeking re-election this year. Porter, 57, had been the school's dean of students since the 2010-11 school year but returned to the classroom teaching sixth-grade social studies and seventh-grade U.S. history.
