Kiyuna, Shimizu win gold in karate kata at World Games

Reigning world champions Ryo Kiyuna and Kiyou Shimizu won gold in the karate kata division for men and women, respectively, at the World Games on Tuesday. All flags went Kiyuna's way for the fifth time of the day in the final at the Gem Sport Complex, giving him a 5-0 victory over Spain's Damian Quintero in the solo performance event where athletes demonstrate choreographed sequences of karate techniques.

Island Karate Dojo recognized by Japanese Imperial family

Three Islanders recenlty received their black belt rankings from Hanshi Ken Tallack, an international Goju-ryu master karate instructor and ninth degree black belt. Darren MacAleer received his third degree black belt while Adriana Catalli and Cathy MacLeod received their first degree belts.
