The 21-year-old fourth dan, from Orford, claimed gold in the individual female 21-35 years Rengokai kata at the UWK World Karate Championships. Second dan Rio Johnson came away with two medals, including the top prize in the individual male 13-14 years Ippon kumite category.

Sport of curling has come a long way in region

Nipigon's Montana Sacchetti earned a bronze medal at the World Karate and Kickboxing Commission championships held Nov. 4-11 in Orlando, Fla. The 16-year-old kickboxer competed in three events – traditional form, weapons form and point fighting – and earned the bronze in point fighting.

Community sports notes: Galeski wins karate golds

Austin Galeski , who competes with the Axsom Martial Arts team, took his competitive career to new heights last weekend as the 2015 Menchville High graduate won two gold medals and a team bronze at the United World Karate World Championships in Montecatini-Terme, Italy, from Nov. 30-Dec. 3. A bronze medal came first, as Galeski teamed with Jason Nishime and Luke Sartino for a third-place finish in the team kumite event. As a member of Team AAU USA, Galeski was part of a national team effort that saw 13 medals earned on the first day.
